What is Engine Oil?

Engine oil is a fluid substance used to lubricate the internal combustion engine. Each manufacturer has its own unique formulation that is designed to handle the intense stress an engine produces.

In general, engine oil consists of a petroleum-based fluid enhanced with various additives that help reduce engine wear and improve performance.

What Are the Signs Your Car Needs an Oil Change?

Changing your engine oil is crucial for helping your engine retain its performance. Fresh and clean engine oil allows your car to run at its optimal level.

Failure to change your engine oil can lead to problems while driving. Here are some signs you should keep an eye on:

1. Check Engine Light

Probably the most obvious sign is that your check engine light is illuminated. However, the check engine light is a general warning and does not necessarily mean you need an oil change. Checking the dipstick is a good way to troubleshoot the issue.

2. Less Visible Oil on the Dipstick

While we’re on the topic of checking the dipstick, make sure to check the oil level as well. Here’s how to perform a dipstick check:

Pull out the oil dipstick.
Wipe it clean with a tissue or paper towel.
Insert it back in and push it all the way down.
Pull it out again and read the oil level between the visible markings.

If your oil level is below the minimum mark (the one closest to the end), change your oil immediately. This indicates that the engine is running with low oil, which can cause serious engine damage if left untreated.

3. Dark Oil

Aside from checking the oil level, the dipstick can also indicate whether your engine oil is dirty. Brand-new engine oil is amber in colour and somewhat translucent. If the engine oil appears dark or even black, consider changing it. This usually means the oil has become contaminated from regular engine wear and use.

4. Knocking Noises

The main job of engine oil is to lubricate the moving parts of the engine. Over time, it becomes less effective at allowing those parts to move smoothly, causing metal components to grind against one another.

5. Shorter Fuel Mileage

Another thing to look out for is your fuel mileage. If you notice that your car is using more fuel than usual, it may be an indication that your engine is operating less efficiently. As engine oil ages, its viscosity changes, which can reduce engine efficiency and contribute to higher fuel consumption.

When Should You Normally Do an Oil Change?

In the past, it was recommended to change your engine oil every 3,000 miles or about 5,000 kilometres. However, engine oil has improved significantly over the years, and most modern cars now use synthetic engine oil.

It’s important to follow the service intervals recommended in your owner’s manual, as every car has different requirements. However, there are some situations where you should change your oil more frequently:

If you don’t drive often. Engine oil can become acidic from exposure to air and metal components inside the engine, especially when it isn’t circulating regularly.
If you drive under harsh conditions, such as off-roading, driving at high RPMs, or frequently taking short trips.
